How to Find Happiness In Hard Times

I feel confident in saying that every person experiences tough periods in life and so knowing how to find happiness in hard times is an important subject.

As much as I purport the idea throughout this site that we have a lot of (untapped) control over the experiences in our lives, most of us (myself included) nevertheless will have periods of time or specific incidents in our lives that we label as “hard.” My own belief is that truly these times would not be needed were we awakened enough, but it seems that it’s still the way for most of humanity. 💗

Life is often compared to a roller coaster, with its ups and downs. I think most people, most days, enjoy what I call wonderfully ordinary days...wonderful if you pay attention, but essentially nothing dramatically good or bad happening. The extremes, the “big” moments, are just now and then.

Certainly today we are experiencing troubled times on a global scale, a pandemic has taken over most of the world, and people are being affected in many profound and very real ways. Death, isolation, loss of income, uncertainty…no question this is hard times!

While you cannot control everything that happens externally, you CAN control your internal life. Even in officially hard times, there are things you can do and ways to look at things to maintain a positive and even joyful mindset. Here are three tips to do just that:

Surround Yourself With The Right People

I have heard it said that we are the sum total of the five people we surround ourselves with most often. If this is true, then those that we surround ourselves with is, of course, important. Although it may seem obvious in concept, avoiding people who “bring us down” is not always easy–especially if they live in your house! 😉 The idea is, when you have a choice, choose to be around people that are supportive and nurturing. When you don’t have much choice–as when you live in the same household–do your best to minimize the time together and try to connect via phone or text with people that DO lift you up. 🙂

Nowadays, as you know, there are a lot of ways to stay in touch–even during Shelter In Place orders, when you are isolating at home. Technology has seen to that. 🙂

  • Face Time on iPhones and Video calls on Android
  • Skype
  • A simple phone call
  • Email
  • Text
  • Zoom and other video conferencing software can bring together friends and family while staying safe and following health official’s orders.
  • Good old-fashioned letter writing

Remember That Nothing Is Permanent


While change can be a scary thing, when hard times come to pass, change is something to look forward to! Nothing in life is permanent. Say it with me: this too shall pass.

When things are great, we like to think they will stay great always. And, most of us will have more good days than bad (in my own experience). In fact, most of the difficult times you experience in life will end without any extra effort on your part…even though we sometimes think that we have to put forth an immense amount of effort to make something bad go away.

Most of the time, TIME is the only remedy for tough situations. If you want to maximize your joy during difficult times, remember that your situation is not the way things are, only the way they are RIGHT NOW.

Base Your Happiness On Yourself

Since we have discussed how life is divided into highs and lows and the fact that nothing lasts forever, this leads to another thing to keep in mind during the best AND the worst periods.

If you want to have joy on a consistent basis, your joy absolutely cannot be dictated by your circumstances.

If you let every good thing that happens to you leave you soaring on cloud nine and every negative situation send you crashing to earth, you will go through life in a state of emotional exhaustion! Stable, consistent, sustainable joy can only be created and found within yourself, and from conscious choices you make.

Life is far less about what happens to you than it is how you react to it. You are in charge of how you feel. Don’t fall into the routine of letting happiness get to your head and failure to your heart.
