Celebrate Love this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is not a big holiday in our house 🙂 When the kids were younger, we liked to read the story of Saint Valentine and other books, and to make Valentine’s Day cards, and to bake special treats.

The days of crafting and wanting stories to be read to them and getting excited about a heart-shaped cake have long since passed for my kids. None of us are that sentimental and so the holiday has become less of an event for us 🙂 I personally don’t embrace the emphasis on romantic love in the media, although I make no judgements about those who enjoy that part of the day!

But a holiday that celebrates love is something I can get behind!  What’s not to love about love?! ❤️

I like to use Valentine’s Day as a reminder to honor and practice love–the love-one-another-general-mankind sort of love. It’s not an easy task to love those that differ with us on important issues of the day.  Or those that we don’t especially like.  Or the cruel and mean people. But love we must. To quote a popular song of the past:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love.  It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.

~Dione Warrwick

So enjoy Valentine’s Day. Shower your dear ones with cards and candy and gifts. But consider celebrating the other kind of love also by committing a random act of kindness or a planned act of charity and goodwill. ❤️?

And think about how you can make such a practice a daily event…celebrate love February 14th– and the rest of the year too!
